Pierre-Jean de BERANGER, poète, chansonnier (1780- 1857)
Two autograph letters signed. Very interesting letter to Agathe dated February 3, 1841, three pages in-8. He wrote him that he was not in Paris, to answer his ticket for an appointment. "If it had reached me a few days earlier, I would have brought you my answer myself, for I will tell you in confidence that I went to Paris by steamer; that I spent 24 hours there to visit my poor Lamennais, prisoner for a year by the grace of Mr. Martin du Nord and H.M. Louis Ph. who was not angry at giving this little pleasure to the gentlemen of the clergy...but it was necessary to please the dress which my poor old philosopher once wore. It will not be a small glory for H.M. to have imprisoned the greatest writer of our century, with that I fear that this frail and sickly genius will die before his sentence expires". Letter Paris, April 24, 1851, addressed (name of addressee scratched off) Place du Palais in Rennes. 1 ½ page. Thank a young author for those "noble, gracious, touching verses you took the trouble to send me and I hasten to thank you for all the fun they gave me".
