Charles Augustin SAINTE-BEUVE (1804-1869)
Autograph manuscript, signed on the letterhead. Two pages in-4, fine and tight handwriting with corrections. Interesting essay on human laws, the origin and generation of laws. St. Beuve concludes "...a good law prescribes reasonable things, the justice and truth of which a man always appreciates; for a good law, as we have concluded from the exposition we have presented, is but the faithful expression of the needs of the time. But man understands what he needs. Once the law has been understood, man is obliged, but at the same time he is so little obliged that his will can be directed against the law, and he can break it in a more or less blatant manner. The violation of a law is therefore a crime since it is the action of a being who hurts himself, depraves his nature. This is the true and sole basis of the obligation ...". Enclosed is a five-page typewritten text in-4
