Diary of Michel de Montaigne's travels through Italy, Switzerland and Germany in 1580 and 1581. With Notes by M. de Querlon. In Rome and is in Paris, at Le JAY, 1774. Two volumes in-12, period marbled calf, decorated spine with nerves, title piece and tomaison, red jaspered edges (Hook to the headdress and two 4 cm split jaws, one corner slightly packed in volume I). Volume I: 1 f. white (without the false title and portrait), title, 2ff. CVIII-324 full pages, with the error of the page badly numbered 45-46 instead of 43-44 (without the ff. of the publisher's catalogue) instead of a full (period) handwritten page of a table. Volume II: 1 f. blank, false title, title, 603 full pages, badly figured 601, 1 f. blank, from page 179 to 589, the continuation of Montaigne's voyage is in Italian with the translation in French. First edition of this famous diary, whose manuscript was discovered by the abbot of Prunis in 1769. Ex-libris of Guyot de St Michel, honorary member of the Academy of Dijon. Good copy.
