[Démonologie]. LANCRE (Pierre de Rosteguy, dit de)
Table of the inconsistency of evil angels and demons. Where it's amply traced to wizards and sorcery. A very useful and necessary book, not only for judges, but for all those who live under Christian law. Paris, chez Nicolas Buon, 1613; in- 4, half calf 19th century (restored bit on 12 cm, from the first course, abraded caps). 20 f., 590 pp., 9 f., (table). (Uniformly browned). Second partly original, revised and enlarged edition (the first from 1612), complete with its rare folding plate, depicting the "Witches' Sabbath" by Jan Ziarnko (finely lined plate and small missing parts). Important work on witchcraft trials, with chapters on the devil and his disciples and lycanthropy, transformation of man into wolves and other animals. Pierre Lancre (1553-1631), a Bordeaux magistrate charged by Henri IV with repressing witchcraft in the Labourd region, summoned several hundred people, mainly sailors' wives, and sent about sixty people to the stake.
