VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet).
Elements of Neuton's philosophy, made available to everyone. In Amsterdam at Etienne Ledet et Compagnie, 1738; in-8, calf (rubbed, headdresses restored, blunt corners with missing parts). False title, title and 399 pages (scattered marginal wetnesses). Rare first edition of this important scientific work illustrated with a portrait of Voltaire, a frontispiece (reassembled), 7 plates, one of which is unfoldable, 25 vignettes, 25 culs-de-lampe and numerous finely engraved geometric in-text figures. Work opening with a foreword for Madame du Chatelet. Voltaire spoke at length with Emilie du Chatelet, a science-lover, and it was she who enlightened him on Newton's theory of gravitation, whose portrait illustrates the frontispiece, Madame du Chatelet holding a mirror that illuminates Newton's face. Reference: Bengesco II, 1570. National Library, 3753. Cohen, 1037. Cioranescu, 64735.
