Virgin and Child seated
High relief in limestone, hollowed out back, minimal traces of polychromy.
(Head of Christ missing, head of the Virgin broken and glued back, accidents).
Dim. : 47 x 30 x 17, 5 cm
This Virgin and Child offers a composition of great complexity and richness. Sitting on a rock, her foot delicately placed on a base with a naturalistic aspect, the
Virgin surrounds with her right arm the child Jesus balanced on the back of her coat. With her left hand she holds
Jesus, her bust is slightly twisted to the left and her head is tilted to accentuate the softness of her gaze on her Son. Her legs are thrown back to the right. This elegant and mannered attitude, as well as the muscular anatomy of Chris and the care given to the details (the fringe of the dress or the supple lock partially revealed on the back of the shoulder) testify to the appropriation of the codes of the Renaissance style by the anonymous artist who knew how to carve out this image of devotion with such delicacy.
