At the Salon of 1850, Antoine-Louis Barye presented a group entitled Thésée combattant le centaure Biénor. The model was a great success. Its movement, the realism of the tense muscles and the intensity of the scene perfectly illustrate the style of Romantic sculpture.
Most of the model's edition was produced posthumously by Ferdinand Barbedienne in several dimensions. A very few large bronze proofs bear a gold-covered round pastille engraved "Collection F. Barbedienne Paris". Barbedienne Paris" and can be dated between 1877 and 1889.
