[VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet)]. - Lot 39
[VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet)]. Dictionnaire philosophique portatif. Londres (Genève, sans non d'éditeur, Gabriel Grasset), 1764 in-8 (20x12.5 cm), contemporary calf (three jaws split towards the headpieces for 4 cm), spine ribbed and decorated (ors a little faded). Title (false title missing), (V-VIII, table)-344 pages (containing 73 articles). Genuine first edition published clandestinely under a false London address. This charge against superstition and church dogma aroused great indignation, and was condemned and burned in Geneva, Holland, Berne in 1764, Rome and Paris in 1765. Despite the ban, editions followed one another and were expanded at various dates by Voltaire. Reference: Barbier I, 981 Bengesco I, 1400, Quérard X, 283-284.
