Jean GIONO. - Lot 103
Jean GIONO. 19 L.A.S. to Roland Dorgelès, 1954-1970; 20 pages, various sizes, envelopes. [Giono entered the Académie Goncourt in 1954]. His astonishment and emotion at having been chosen: "I've always considered the Académie Goncourt to be an assembly of very high quality [...] I've never thought much about honors, but we're not saints, and I've thought about honors sometimes, as one says to oneself 'if you won the jackpot'. That was the Académie Goncourt"... (Dec. 11, 1954). He is deeply moved by Carco's death (1958). Condolences on the death of Hania Dorgelès (May 20, 1959). Reading of À bas l'argent! (Oct. 5, 1965). Suffering from a heart condition, he was unable to come to Paris, and voted for José Cabanis and if not for Réjean Ducharme; he had lost millions of red blood cells: "You look for style for years, then a little trickle of blood dries up and the style is gone"... (1966). Reads Lettre ouvert à un milliardaire, "one of the best moralist books (without hard collar or cuffs) I know" (Oct. 4, 1967). He votes for Vendredi by Michel Tournier; he doesn't much like Lanoux to replace Gérard Bauër: "He's a manufacturer" (Nov. 1. 1967). He had to wait before replacing Aragon (Dec. 9. 1968)... Etc. Plus 2 greetings cards.
