DESCARTES (René). The Principles of Philosophy. Written in L - Lot 6
DESCARTES (René). The Principles of Philosophy. Written in Latin, translated into French by one of his friends [Claude Picot], revised and corrected in this latest edition. Paris, by Michel Bobin et Nicolas Le Gras, 1668; large in-4 (23.5x18.5 cm), contemporary calf (jaws split all along both boards, top headband torn off, headband missing at foot, corners dull with edgewear missing). 28 ff. n. ch. 477-(3, privilege) pages, (title and first ten pages browned. One folding plate, 21 full-page figures and numerous in-text woodcuts. Work divided into four parts. Principles of human knowledge, principles of material things, of the visible world, of the earth. In the preface, page b Ij, letter from Descartes to the translator "Monsieur, the version you have taken the trouble to make of my principles is so clear and so accomplished, that it gives me hope that they will be read by more people in French than in Latin, and that they will be better understood. I only fear that the title will put off many who have not been brought up in letters, or who have a bad opinion of philosophy".
