Thus begins the foreword: "Money, in this day and age, gives pleasure, consideration, friends, success, talent, even spirit; this sweet metal must therefore be the constant object of love and solicitude for mortals of all ages and conditions, from kings to grisettes, from landlords to émigrés. But this money, source of all pleasures, origin of all glories, is also the goal of all attempts". This is one of Honoré de Balzac's earliest works.
